Livelihood and Women’s Empowerment
Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
For over 30 years, SVSS has empowered women through education, literacy, non-formal learning, theatre, and community development. A key pillar of this work is the promotion of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which provide women with financial security while reducing their dependence on exploitative moneylenders.
With support from NABARD, SVSS facilitated the formation of SHGs and bank linkages. Although the funding ended in 2018, SVSS continues to mentor and strengthen these groups.
Beyond savings and credit, SHGs have become platforms for learning, leadership, and community action. Women’s libraries have been established in three villages, where members organize regular reading sessions and discussions on village development. They also actively engage with the Panchayati Raj system.
These efforts have translated into greater political participation. In the 2022 Panchayat elections, three SHG members were elected as Panchs in Pattikalyana, while in Basada, one member was elected Sarpanch and three others became Panchs by consensus. SHG women also played an active role in election campaigning.
The groups also independently organize and celebrate International Women’s Day, reflecting their growing confidence, leadership, and collective strength.
