Our Vision

The Shaheed Virendra Smarak Samiti believes that safeguarding and strengthening public education is essential for building an equitable society. Since its inception, the organisation has consistently undertaken constructive initiatives to improve the quality of education, particularly in government schools, while fostering a culture of critical thinking, creativity, and meaningful learning.

Early Interventions in Government Schools

To promote holistic education, the Samiti has organised a wide range of educational and cultural activities, including children’s fairs, street theatre performances, book reading sessions, and pamphlet reading campaigns. Alongside these initiatives, regular discussions, workshops, and seminars have been conducted with teachers to strengthen educational practices. In several villages, the organisation has also collaborated with School Management Committees (SMCs) to enhance community participation in school development.

Jeevanshala

Jeevanshala was a unique educational initiative for the children of weaker sections of society. From 1997 to 2020 SVSS supported Jeevanshala centers in different villages of District Panipat.

Understanding the Learning Challenge

Through years of engagement with schools and communities, the Samiti observed that many children progressed through the education system by relying primarily on rote learning rather than genuine understanding. Alarmingly, even students in Classes VIII and X often struggled with basic reading and comprehension skills. These findings highlighted the urgent need to improve foundational learning at the primary level.

Focus on Foundational Learning

Recognising that strong foundational literacy is critical for a child’s future academic success, the Samiti decided to focus its efforts on primary education. Early literacy and numeracy skills not only improve children’s confidence and learning outcomes but also significantly reduce dropout rates. The organisation also identified the need to strengthen teachers’ capacity, as many lacked adequate pedagogical understanding and practical strategies for developing foundational language skills among young learners.

Hindi Language Teaching Programme (HLTP) (2016–2018)

Drawing inspiration from the experiences of Jeevanshala, the Samiti designed the Hindi Language Teaching Programme (HLTP) in 2016 with financial support from the Wipro Foundation. Implemented in eight government schools, the programme focused on strengthening Hindi language learning among students up to Class V while simultaneously building the capacities of teachers. By the end of the project in 2018, significant improvements were observed in children’s language proficiency and overall learning levels, a progress acknowledged by the participating teachers themselves.

Meaning Making through Children’s Literature (MMCL)

The success of the HLTP demonstrated that children’s literature could serve as a powerful medium for improving language learning, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. Building on these insights, the Samiti launched the Meaning Making through Children’s Literature (MMCL) project. The initiative integrates storybooks, poems, and other forms of children’s literature into classroom teaching, enabling students to engage with language in a meaningful, enjoyable, and context-rich manner.

Ongoing Work Since 2020

Since 2020, the MMCL programme has been implemented continuously across the Samalkha Block. The organisation has maintained an ongoing dialogue with teachers through articles, workshops, and discussions on the role of children’s literature in fostering reading with comprehension. To support classroom practice, the Samiti has also developed a series of resource materials addressing key themes such as language acquisition, the importance of school libraries, reading culture, and the broader process of learning.

Impact

The Samiti’s sustained work in education has contributed to:

  • Strengthening foundational literacy among primary school children.
  • Promoting child-centred and activity-based teaching practices.
  • Enhancing teachers’ pedagogical skills in language education.
  • Encouraging the use of children’s literature as an effective learning tool.
  • Building a stronger reading culture in government schools.
  • Supporting community participation in improving public education.

Through these initiatives, the Shaheed Virendra Smarak Samiti continues to work towards ensuring that every child has access to meaningful, joyful, and equitable learning opportunities.

Learning Centres & Community Libraries

SVSS runs a network of community Learning Centres and Libraries that nurture a culture of reading, learning, and leadership among children, adolescents, and youth. These centres provide access to quality books, homework support, free coaching, language learning, and engaging activities such as storytelling, book discussions, and children’s literature sessions.

Beyond academics, the centres encourage critical thinking, community participation, and volunteerism by training local youth and women. They also serve as spaces for lifelong learning, supporting students preparing for competitive examinations while strengthening local institutions such as School Management Committees.

Today, our Learning Centres continue to build confident readers, informed citizens, and future community leaders, while expanding access to knowledge in rural communities.
